Betts Bridge Road in West Pawlet is closed to through traffic until further notice pending installation of a box culvert near the Route 153 end of the road.

Planning Commission seeks new member: The Pawlet Planning Commission wishes to thank retiring member John Thrasher for his leadership and service as Chair of the commission. The Select Board will appoint a new member to serve the remainder of his term, which ends in 2016, at the next Select Board meeting on October 28. Anyone interested on serving on the planning commission should submit a letter of intent to Deb Hawkins, Town Clerk, before October 28.

Haystack Hustlers Seniors October Events: Potluck lunch, October 14, 12 PM, Pawlet Church.  After lunch Linda Bates will talk on seeking and collecting rocks of all kinds. She will tell us about the Marble Trail in Vermont and show a video of this trail. October 28, 12 PM, lunch at the Mettawee Community school and program presented by the students. Town of Pawlet Select Board special meeting, Thursday, October 16, 9:30 AM, Wastewater Treatment Plant, Railroad Avenue, West Pawlet: The board will meet with Green Mountain Engineering to discuss process issues.

Fall Festival and Flea Market, Saturday, October 18, West Pawlet, 9 AM – 3 PM: The event will be held rain or shine at the fire station on Vermont Route 153 (Main Street).  Vendor spaces are available to rent. Activities include a food sale, luncheon, raffle and 50/50 drawing, and bobbing for apples for the children. Take part in the pumpkin painting contest from 10 AM to 1 PM. Or make a pumpkin or apple pie for the pie baking contest at 11 AM. There is a $5.00 entry fee for the pie baking contest.  Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. Pie entries must be delivered before 10:45 AM. Luncheon begins at 11:30 AM; menu includes hamburgers, hot dogs and beverages. Walk, talk and look at pedestrian safety in Pawlet, Thursday, October 23, 10 AM – 12:30 PM, beginning at the Town Hall: Members of the Rutland Regional Planning Commission, AARP, and the Rutland Area Physical Activity Coalition invite area residents to join them as they walk around Pawlet village as part of a health impacts study to assess paving, sidewalks, streetscapes etc. to ascertain suitability for walkers. The group will survey sidewalk conditions, speed zones, street signage, crosswalks, and more. The survey will help efforts to develop a healthy, safe, supportive infrastructure in Pawlet. Share the Warmth Clothing Drive, 9 AM – 1 PM, Saturday and Sunday, October 25-26, Mettawee Community School: This semi-annual clothing drive and giveaway at Mettawee Community School in West Pawlet, offers thousands of clothing items and footwear free for anyone! Please bring your own shopping bags. Please also consider donating new/used clean, stain-free clothing (babies through adult, any season), outerwear, footwear, accessories, blankets and even prom dresses, suits and Halloween costumes. If you are donating a large lot, please sort items into warm weather or cold weather groups. Donations will be taken Thursday, October 23 from 2:45-5:30 and Friday, October 24 any time before 4 PM at the school. West Pawlet Fire Department Pancake Breakfast, Sunday, November 9, 7:30 to 11 AM, West Pawlet fire house: The fire house is located on Route 153 (Main Street) in West Pawlet, and it’s a handicap-accessible site.  All are welcome. Pancake menu includes regular as well as chocolate chip, blueberry and cranberry. Sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, and home fries are also served, along with coffee, milk and orange juice. Prices are $8 for 12 years and up, $5 for 5-12 years and free to children under the age of 5.  A 501(c) (3) non-profit, all proceeds are for the benefit of the department’s equipment and training needs.
